East Africa boasts some of the finest mountain climbing opportunities in the world. It provides excellent trails, exhilarating views, and a real sense of adventure. Mount Meru is located in Tanzania, within Arusha National Park. It is the second-highest peak in Tanzania and is located in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, however the experience of climbing this mountain is as fulfilling and can provide an adventure with fewer crowds. If you are seeking a mixture of nature, wildlife, and a sustained challenge, then this 4 Days Mount Meru Climbing is a good option.
4-Day Mount Meru Climbing Itinerary
Day One: Starting at Momella Gate and Ending at Miriakamba Hut
The hike begins at the Momella gate; a ranger joins your group for
safety and, as you make your way through grassland and forest you may have a
chance to spot some wildlife along the way. After a leisurely hike you will
reach your destination, Miriakamba Hut.
Day Two: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
The trail continues to grow steeper. The trees will start to thin out
as you reach closer to the top. The view from the saddle hut will begin to be
more open, but the temperature will start to drop as well. The saddle hut will
be reached by afternoon. Some people also like to take a quick hike to Little
Meru for added views after they get to the saddle hut.
Day Three: Summit Day and Make Your Way Back to Miriakamba Hut
This will be a very difficult day to hike. It will usually start much
earlier than midnight. The trail from the saddle hut will be very steep and
rocky. You will arrive at the summit, also known as Socialist Peak, just as the
sun comes up and provide you with fantastic views of a great distance including
Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day. After taking some pictures and having time to
rest, you will then start your way back down the mountain to Miriakamba Hut.
Day Four: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate
This is a much easier day than the previous three, the trail you hike
will lead you back down to Momella Gate through the forest. When you arrive at
the Momella Gate, you will have completed your hike up Mount Meru.
